Communicating with customers should never be a battle of wits.

Why is it that jargon and special technical terms are all too often used as weapons to exclude the uninitiated from a conversation and feed the egos of those who are ‘in the know'? Have you ever queued in a plumber's merchants to ask if they've got ‘one of these'… only to be sneered at and asked whether it's BSPP, BSPT or NPT? Sometimes, you can almost detect their glee in totally flummoxing you with their  superior knowledge. I've nothing against plumbers'merchants – most are really helpful. Furthermore, the confusing use of jargon can apply to any industry.

Jargon and acronyms often originate from a need to simplify communication by using a kind of shorthand. However, it's only simple if both parties in the communication understand the meaning of these special words or phrases. If the essence of good sales technique is making it easier for your customer to do business with you… then clear communication is essential. Good suppliers – whatever the industry – take care to avoid jargon and only use language that their customers can readily understand.
